Introduction

St David Lewis trained as a priest at the Venerable English College (VEC) in Rome and was ordained in 1642.

The original manuscripts which document his stay are held at the VEC in Rome. These comprise the book of enrolment or college register, the questionnaire which he completed on admission and the sermon which he gave in the presence of Pope Urban VIII on St Stephens day 1642.

Parishioners from the combined parish of Monmouth and Ross on Wye were led on a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi by Fr Nicholas James in May 2019. When we visited the VEC we were shown these papers by the Hon Archivist, Prof Maurice Whitehead. It was an inspiring and humbling experience to see the original documents which are now nearly 400 years old.

It is not surprising that the papers of these 3 volumes are deteriorating with time and that they require urgent specialist conservation attention.

We believe that these documents are of considerable long term importance to both Wales and to Monmouthshire

The cost of restoration and conservation of the 3 volumes is estimated at Euro 3800.00.This estimate is given by Manuela Panucci, who is a specialist restorer based in Rome who has successfully completed other projects.
