A MESSAGE FROM FATHER NICK 1 – 22nd March 2020
A word of reassurance in difficult times
Coming so soon after the floods, Covid-19 confronts us with a much more serious challenge. We hope and pray that the present situation will not last long, but its effects may prove more enduring.
It is right to call this a crisis, as long as we understand that one of the meanings of that word is opportunity – an opportunity for good. At the moment, this might not feel like a positive experience, and the prospect of saying mass without a congregation seems very strange to me, but I have been deeply touched by the evidence of parishioners’ care for each other and for their parish priest.
While the church must remain empty, I shall continue to say Mass, and from next weekend we hope to be able to stream mass into parishioners’ homes. The sacred ritual will continue, but one thing has already been emphasised by our progressive response to the virus threat. It has highlighted our sign of peace, our sharing of the chalice, our very presence as God’s family. The Eucharist was always intended by Jesus as a sign of oneness with him and with each other. May we use this opportunity to grow in practical concern for each other and so extend that mystery in our daily lives.
