Catechists
Forming for the future
“Catechists have always had a very important role in the secular journey of evangelisation. Even today, they are considered to be irreplaceable evangelisers …” (Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples – GUIDE FOR CATECHISTS).
Catechists help form and teach candidates who are preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Baptism. Within our parish they are also employed to instruct couples preparing for Marriage. They teach candidate the significance of the sacrament they are preparing to receive and the consequences of receiving the sacrament.
Preparation of candidates is essential to ensure they receive a sacrament with full knowledge and understanding, having the proper freedom to receive the fullness of grace being offered. Sacraments are not magic and require participation. Sacramental formation usually takes place over a number of weeks. Catechists spend time preparing sessions using the preparation programme used by the parish, then they spend time with the candidates teaching them the session.
If you are interested in helping form candidates a training programme for catechists is available to prepare you for the role.
